EDMONTON HIGHLAND ARTS FESTIVAL A HUGE SUCCESS
The 2010 Edmonton Highland Arts Festival,
sponsored by the Edmonton and District Pipe Band, concluded with an amazing concert by the six-time World Champion
SFU Pipe Band on April 11, 2010 at the Winspear Centre.
The weekend started off with a reception on Friday evening, when pipe band enthusiasts from around North America
rolled into Edmonton to get ready for the weekend.
Saturday started off with a great workshop program of over 40 different piping and drumming sessions led by members
of SFU, which were attended by about 200 participants. After the day of workshops, a sold-out ceilidh was held,
where 400 attendees were treated to a performance by SFU - a sneak peek for the concert to come the next day.
The weekend finished off with the amazing Affirmation Concert, where over 1200 concert goers were treated to the
best the pipe band world has to offer. And no one went away disappointed!
The Edmonton and District Pipe Band would like to thank SFU for sharing their time, commitment, and great talent
with us. We would also like to thank our sponsors and many volunteers, and most importantly we would like to thank
the pipe band enthusiasts from around the continent who came to Edmonton to share a special weekend with us. |

An Open invitation to the Edmonton Highland Arts Festival from SFU
On behalf of the Simon Fraser
University Pipe Band, Cragvore Music Society and Edmonton and District Pipe Band, I would like to invite your band
to attend our AFFIRMATION Concert April 11, 2010 in Edmonton Alberta. This will be a full weekend of pipe music,
instruction and entertainment. We are pleased to present this concert in Edmonton.
There will be an informal reception on Friday, April 9, 2010 after the band arrives. It will be a chance to pick
up your workshop packages, meet some SFU members, hear some pipe music and visit with friends. Details for the
reception can be found at www.edpb.ca.
On Saturday, April 10, 2010, there will be piping, drumming and band workshops, led by members of SFU. These workshops
are for all ages and all levels. If you want to work on light music, ensemble, or solo playing, you will find a
class that fits your needs. SFU has conducted workshops of this type in the past and we are excited about being
able to present this format for the first time on the Prairies. I hope as many of your players as possible can
attend. Registration and payment forms can be found at www.edpb.ca.
The Edmonton and District Pipe Band is organizing a ceilidh for Saturday evening, April 10, 2010. I hope you will
be able to attend this pre-concert event. Ceilidh impromptu playing is open to anyone who wishes to get up and
play.
The final event of this weekend will be our AFFIRMATION concert. The band recently performed this concert in Glasgow
prior to winning its Sixth World Championship in August 2009. We are tremendously excited about bringing this concert
to Edmonton for your enjoyment. In addition, I understand that on April 10, the Northern Canadian Highland Dance
Championship will be held in Edmonton. Winning dancers will be invited to perform on stage with Simon Fraser University
during the concert.
In closing, I will say that this is going to be a fantastic weekend of highland music for everyone. Players, old
and new, will have an opportunity to receive instruction from some of the most accomplished pipers and drummers
in the world. The ceilidh and concert will be a showcase of talent in which local players will also have a chance
to shine.
I look forward to seeing many of you in Edmonton.
Yours truly,
Terry Lee, Pipe Major
Simon Fraser University Pipe Band |
