Grande Prairie Legion Tattoo
While
visiting family in Rycroft this month, I took the opportunity to volunteer with my Legion Branch 224 at the Grande
Prairie Legion Military Tattoo. It took place on June 09 as a spectacular kick-off to the June 11 AB-NWT RCL 2007
Convention and was attended by a small but very enthusiastic audience who were just blown away by the entertaining
program and calibre of the music.
All of the bands were just terrific, including our own E&D and the stirring massed performance at the end caused
many a tear in the house. I didn't figure out the telephoto autofocus on my spiffy new camera until the next day
but managed a few shots, now in the gallery. The hosts, the Grande Prairie Legion, did a good job and a great time
was had by the E&D members.

("The term military tattoo, referring to
a military drum performance, dates from the seventeenth century when the British Army were fighting in the Low
Countries (Belgium and The Netherlands). Drummers from the garrison were sent out into the towns at 21:30 hrs (9:30PM)
each evening to inform the soldiers that it was time to return to barracks. The process was known as Doe den tap
toe and encouraged the inn keepers to "turn off the taps", stop serving beer and send the soldiers home
for the night. The drummers continued to play until the curfew at 22:00 hrs (10:00PM).
Over the years, the process became more of a show and often included the playing of the first post at 21:30 hrs
and the last post at 22:00. Bands and displays were included and shows were often conducted by floodlight or searchlight.
Tattoos were commonplace in the late 1800s with most military and garrison towns putting on some kind of show or
entertainment during the summer months.") Source:

Workshop with Ken Eller and Doug Stronach
May 05 and 06: E&D enjoyed an outstanding weekend of instruction. Ken and Doug did a great job with the Grade
IV and Grade III corps. Getting a fresh perspective on things aids our band in a very positive way.

which is currently under construction.

NOVEMBER 2006
The members of the Edmonton & District
Pipe Band were saddened to hear of the death of Bob Dunsire. He was a kind, friendly and helpful man with a great
sense of humour. His support and contributions to the piping and drumming community brought people together throughout
the world and he will be greatly missed. Our condolences to Bob's family and friends.
